SpecTips: Achieving High Wind and Very Severe Hail Ratings with a Single Product
A Composite Insulation Panel for Extreme Wind and Hail Performance
In many areas of the country, high wind speeds and very severe hail have become significant concerns for designers and building owners alike. A study conducted by Princeton University found that average wind speeds have increased 7% since 2010. In 2018, FM Global added the Very Severe Hail (VSH) designation as a requirement in 14 states where hail can exceed two inches in diameter. High winds and very severe hail are especially problematic in the Midwest and West South-Central regions of the United States, where designers have struggled to design their roofing systems to be resilient against these environmental extremes.
SecurShield® HD Composite is Carlisle’s first insulation product to achieve both a VSH rating from FM Global and a wind uplift rating of FM 1-300. Additionally, SecurShield HD Composite can achieve up to an FM 1-90 with only 6 fasteners per board. Carlisle’s SecurShield HD Composite achieves these difficult ratings due to its unique composition comprised of a ½” high-density polyiso cover board laminated to SecurShield rigid polyiso insulation with coated glass facers. SecurShield HD Composite is approved for buildings with both high wind uplift requirements and those requiring a VSH approved system.
SecurShield HD’s performance benefits help to improve the resiliency of the building while also offering the sustainability benefits of polyiso’s superior R-value – improving the building’s energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions.

With sustainability at the forefront of every architect’s mind, choosing the most environmentally friendly products can seem daunting. In the commercial roofing and building envelope industry, a holistic approach should be taken to ensure the products chosen will maximize the building’s sustainability while also maintaining or improving long-term performance.
