SpecTips - Carlisle’s Sure-Weld HS TPO Special Color Program
As the architectural community continues to push the possibilities of form and function, low-slope roof systems have remained mostly stagnant in terms of color choice to aid in design. Most roof membrane manufacturers offer only two or three standard colors (typically black, white, gray, or tan). While these basic colors satisfy performance requirements, the aesthetic flexibility and value of a visible roof can be limited. Having options for roof membrane color is important to maintain visual appeal in easily viewed areas such as mansards, barrel roofs, sloped roof areas, and exposed walls between higher and lower roof areas.
To address the desire for alternative membrane colors, many specifiers have turned to coatings or custom color membranes. However, custom color membranes are often very costly and come with long lead times and very large minimum order quantity requirements. Alternatively, adding a coating to a newly roofed area can add significant additional cost, time, and complexity to the project and could become a maintenance item down the line.
Carlisle's TPO Color Palette can provide additional design flexibility and aesthetic value with the performance and warranty protection that designers and building owners expect from a Carlisle SynTec roof system. In addition to standard white, gray, and tan colors, Carlisle's TPO Color Palette includes five special colors – Rock Brown, Slate Gray, Terra Cotta, Patina Green, and Medium Bronze – available in 60 mil Sure-Weld TPO membrane with flashing membrane, contour rib profile, TPO coated metal, and custom fabricated accessories to match. These special colors can be used on the entire roof area, or just on highly visible portions of the roof such as walls or mansards.
TIPS
TPO Color Palette choices should be included in Division 7- 'Thermal and Moisture Protection' of 3-part CSI specifications as roof membrane color selections under Part II 'Products'.
When specifying colors, make sure the project’s spec calls out for colors of flashing, coated metal, and any other accessories that need to match the membrane.

Eliminating Condensation Risks of Cool Roofs with SPF
In warm climates, cool roofs that use white EPDM, TPO, or PVC can offer energy savings by reflecting more sunlight and absorbing less heat than a darker-colored roof. However, white membranes may increase the risk of condensation forming in the roofing system.
