SpecTips - How to Fill the Flutes on Standing Seam Metal Roofs for Retrofit Applications

A Cost-Effective Metal Standing Seam Retrofit Solution

Before recovering a metal standing seam roof with single-ply membrane, the flutes of the roof must be “filled.” Flute fill material must be custom cut, both in width and profile (e.g. straight, tapered, or square-cut) for each job. The flute fill insulation not only provides R-value but also serves as a substrate to support the cover board and membrane above.

In many scenarios, expanded polystyrene (EPS) can provide a more cost-effective solution with shorter lead times when compared to other metal retrofit recover options.

Substitution of EPS for other products is fairly straightforward when utilizing the code approval tables provided in the attachment below.

Under the Product Section of the specification, add EPS Flute Fill Product with the following attributes:
  • ASTM C578 Type I EPS
  • Minimum 10psi compressive strength
  • R-value of R-3.85/inch
  • Select one [Square Cut] [Tapered Cut] [Custom Profile Cut]
