SpecTips - Maintain a Clean and Reflective Membrane During Installation with APEEL Protective Film

APEEL™ Protective Film–Now Available for PVC & KEE HP Membranes

Architects and specifiers often select light-colored reflective membranes like PVC andKEE HP because they absorb less heat in the summer months in warmer climates. When re-roofing or working on projects that are built in phases, foot traffic from trades people can cause dirt accumulation and abrasions on the membrane. The inevitable dirt and debris that is tracked from one roof section to another will result in a soiled roof, reducing the membrane’s reflectivity right from the start of its life.

To address this, many specifications require cleaning dirty roof membranes with soap and water, pressure washers, or chemicals prior to turning the building over to the owner.

As an environmentally friendly alternative to cleaning the roof, Carlisle’s patented APEEL Protective Film should be specified.

APEEL Protective Film is factory-applied to PVC andKEE HP membranes and is easy to remove once the project is complete. Carlisle’s APEEL guards the membrane’s surface during construction, eliminating the need to clean the roof once the project is finished which saves time and money.

In addition to maximizing reflectivity and eliminating the environmental impact of using water and chemicals for cleaning, APEEL film on PVC andKEE HP membranes is recyclable.Utilizing 100% PVC film with no adhesives, APEEL was designed with recyclability and sustainability in mind.

Sure-Flex™PVC and KEE HP membranes with APEEL Protective Film are ideal for re-roofing, re-cover, and new construction projects.Thedurablefilm is UV resistant and can be left in place for up to 90 days while remaining easy to remove.

TIPS
As this film is designed to be removed, it allows the roof to start its service as clean as possible. APEEL Protective Film is in competition with power washing or extensive cleaning with membrane cleaners. Language should be added to the PVC or KEE HP membrane specification to include APEEL Protective Film as part of the membrane description, such as “factory-applied protective film provided by manufacturer of membrane”. This could be written as the Basis of Design and the creation of acceptable alternates for other PVC or KEE HP membranes would need to add a phrase such as “field cleaning upon substantial completion of roofing system.”

If a non-proprietary spec is being written, suggest APEEL as an alternate to power washing or extensive cleaning with PVC & KEE HP Membrane Cleaner. When using the Alternates method, utilize Division 1 –“Alternates” to include APEEL inthe “Schedule of Alternates” list for inclusion in the bid.
