Cool Roofing and CRRC

Many of today’s commercial roofing jobs are impacted by state or local regulations or project requirements to have a reflective roof membrane. Most requirements call for specific thresholds for numbers such as solar reflectance, thermal emittance, and solar reflective index (SRI) of a given roofing material. The International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), the State of California, and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) V4 rating system call for certification of these numbers by the third-party testing organization known as Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC).

The CRRC was created in 1998 to develop accurate and credible methods for evaluating and labeling the solar reflectance and thermal emittance (radiative properties) of roofing products and to disseminate that information to all interested parties.

At the core of the CRRC is its Product Rating Program, a fee-for-service program which provides financial support for CRRC operations. This program allows manufacturers to label various roof surface products with radiative property values rated under a strict program administered by the CRRC. Code bodies, architects, building owners, and specifiers all rely on the rating information provided in the CRRC Rated Products Directory.
